Distance covered: 620 km

The adventure kicks off with an early morning departure from Delhi. The drive heads north on NH-44 through Karnal and Ludhiana before entering Jammu & Kashmir through Udhampur.

The final climb to Patnitop brings you to a cool pine-covered ridge at 2,024 m, the perfect overnight halt to break the long haul. Watch the sunset paint the Chenab valley gold before settling into your hotel.

Stop at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass to honour India's fallen soldiers before reaching Kargil town, nestled at the confluence of the Suru and Wakha rivers.

Distance covered: 230 km

This is the crown-jewel driving day. Head south from Kargil into the Suru Valley, passing through Sankoo and Panikhar with the towering Nun-Kun massif dominating the horizon. At Rangdum, a solitary monastery perches on a hill amid a vast glacial plain.

The road then climbs to Pensi La (4,400 m), where the enormous Drang Drung Glacier comes into view — a wall of ice stretching nearly 23 km. Descend into the Zanskar Valley and arrive at Padum as the late afternoon light bathes the valley floor.

If time permits, take a longer excursion toward Phugtal Monastery — one of India's most dramatic cliff monasteries, accessible only on foot. Return to Padum and spend the evening interacting with local Zanskari families, sampling traditional butter tea and tsampa (roasted barley flour).

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to take this road trip?

The ideal window is mid-June through mid-September. Zoji La and Pensi La passes are typically snow-free during these months, and the Zanskar Valley receives mild summer weather with daytime temperatures between 15–25 °C. July and August bring occasional rain, so late June or September offers the clearest skies.

How serious is altitude sickness (AMS), and how can I prepare?

Acute Mountain Sickness is a real risk above 3,000 m. This itinerary includes gradual altitude gain and rest days in Leh for acclimatisation. Stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol at altitude, eat light carbohydrate-rich meals, and carry Diamox (acetazolamide) after consulting your doctor. Our vehicle carries an emergency oxygen cylinder as an added precaution.

Do I need any permits for Zanskar Valley and Ladakh?

Yes. Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for areas like Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley, and parts of Zanskar. These are arranged in Leh or online through the Ladakh UT portal. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Our package covers ILP processing for Indian nationals.

Will I have mobile network coverage along the route?

Mobile connectivity is patchy throughout the journey. BSNL and Jio postpaid SIMs work in Srinagar, Kargil, and Leh, but signal drops completely in the Zanskar Valley, between Kargil and Padum, and on most high passes. Prepaid connections from some carriers may not work in J&K and Ladakh at all. Carry a power bank and inform family about expected offline periods in advance.

What kind of vehicle is used, and can I bring my own bike?

We use a shared SUV (Toyota Innova, Mahindra Scorpio, or similar) or a Tempo Traveller for groups. If you prefer to ride your own motorcycle, we can arrange a bike-only package with backup vehicle support — contact us for custom pricing.

What should I pack for this trip?

Layer your clothing: thermal inners, fleece mid-layer, and a windproof / waterproof outer shell. Carry sturdy trekking shoes, sunglasses with UV protection, SPF 50+ sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and a headlamp or torch. A small day-pack, reusable water bottle, personal medications, and a basic toiletry kit round out the essentials. Nights at Sarchu and Padum can dip below freezing, so a warm sleeping bag liner is recommended even in summer.

Well Organized Himalayan Expedition The trip was well planned from start to finish. Long drives were comfortable and the vehicle provided was good for mountain roads. Zanskar Valley is truly a hidden gem and much less crowded than other Ladakh destinations. I would definitely recommend this trip to adventure seekers.
